I am a firm believer in herbs and compounds, especially when I needed relief the most. They changed my life! The following are six magic herbs and compounds that will instantly boast your mental health no matter what you struggle with.

So, let’s get right into a few of my top choices, which are adaptogens. I picked adaptogens because, in times of high stress, they worked so well for me. I’ve also suggested adaptogens to a few of my clients, and they’ve had amazing results. If you do not know what an adaptogen herb is, it is basically a component of herbal medicines that help the body’s resilience in dealing with physical and emotional stresses. Adaptogens help your body adapt. Ashwagandha, Astragalus, and Bacopa* are all adaptogens.

  1. Ashwagandha: Ashwagandha is a small evergreen shrub. It grows in India, the Middle East, and parts of Africa. The root and berry are used to make medicine. It is used to reduce anxiety and stress, reduce cortisol, fight depression, boost fertility (and testosterone in men), and boost brain function.

  2. L-theanine: L-theanine is an amino acid found primarily in green and black tea and some mushrooms. It is also available in pill or tablet form. It is used for stress relief, increased focus, better immunity, blood pressure management, and reducing insomnia.

  3. Bacopa: Bacopa is a plant that has been used in traditional Indian Ayurvedic medicine. Do not confuse bacopa with Gotu Kola. Both plants are sometimes called Brahmi. Brahmi, Bacopa monnieri, is a tropical, perennial, non-aromatic herb used in Ayurveda medicine. It grows in rice fields and damp areas. Its leaves are succulent, oblong, thick, and arranged alternately. The flowers are small and white with four to five petals. Bacopa is commonly used for Alzheimer's disease, memory and thinking skills (cognitive function), anxiety, and attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder. It is used to treat epilepsy, asthma, ulcers, tumors, gastroenteritis, ascites, enlarged spleen, anemia, inflammations, and leprosy.

  4. Astragalus: Astragalus is a large genus of over 3,000 species of herbs and small shrubs belonging to the legume family. It contains antioxidants, which protect cells against damage. Astragalus protects and supports the immune system, preventing colds and upper respiratory infections, lowering blood pressure, treating diabetes, and protecting the liver. Astragalus has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties.

  5. Vitamin D3: The D3 form is found in fatty animal-sourced foods, such as fish oil and egg yolk. Your skin also produces it in response to sunlight or ultraviolet light. In contrast, vitamin D2 comes from plants. Interestingly, vitamin D3 appears to be more effective at increasing levels of vitamin D in the blood. Vitamin D3 offers many health benefits. It is known to help strengthen bones and muscles, boost immunity, increase mood, aid in weight loss, and improve heart function.

  6. Magnesium: May boost exercise performance, fights depression, can lower blood pressure, prevent migraines, improve pos symptoms, and help with anxiety.
